Thriving on a budget

Recycling

I am always striving to keep my weight down. I do not pay for expensive gym memberships. Instead, I take walks where I bring along empty plastic baggies and pick up soda and beer bottles along the way. My exercise plan actually EARNS me money. How cool is that.

In several states, you can earn a few extra bucks just picking up discarded soda bottles and beer cans. In the state I live in, they are worth 5 cents each and boy do I find a lot of them. On average, my hubby and I make an extra 5 to 10 dollars a week with only a moderate effort at this.

Best places to look for bottles and cans

Public Waste Baskets - Often you can get 1 to 3 cans just off the top.
Recycling Area of Your Local Super Market - Often people leave bottles not accepted at that particular location. Sometimes I find over a dollars' worth all conveniently in one place.
Timing is everything - Try the local high school or college fields shortly after a game or other big event. You will probably be leaving with as much as you can carry. For the past few years I went early the next morning to where the Fourth of July Fire Works were the night before. This is definitely my single best finding.
The mall - During the winter, who wants to go walking? Certainly not me, not unless it is in an indoors. The mall is perfect for this. I do find plenty of soda bottles discarded in the rubbish.
